Speed & Smarts (5) #105 IQ Test

The latest Speed & Smarts dropped in my mailbox last week. In it a new version of the IQ test: How well do you know the 2009-2012 racing rules?

I've scanned a couple of the questions and am giving you the opportunity to test yourself. If you want the whole test + all the information on how to sail faster you should definitly have a look at the web-site: SpeedandSmarts You can already subscribe for $35 for the Email version.

Here are questions 61 trough 74: In each you will have to choose how wide X can sail. If you want to leave your answers in a comment, please also write why you picked M, P or W.

Good luck!

I'll post the correct answers in a couple of days.

  1. As a preface to my answers I think I should say I interpret P Proper course rounding to be what we used to call a tactical rounding.
    61 M X is a keep clear boat
62 W Z must keep clear. Any change of course by X subject to 16. However X cannot sail further than the position where she needs to gybe to sail her proper course as 18.4 applies.
63 W X RoW No 18.4 at a gate Z must keep clear. Any change of course by X subject to 16.
    64 W same as 62.
    65 W X RoW No 18.4 in team racing
    66 P X Row but subject to 17 and 18.4
67 W X RoW However if she does not sail a proper course promptly when she becomes 'at'the mark she cannot claim exoneration if she subsequently breaks a rule of Section A, 15 or 16.
    68 W Same comment as 67
69 W Although X is a keep clear boat she can sail as wide as she likes so long as she does not interfere with Z. However if she does not sail promptly to the mark and promptly sail a proper course at the mark she cannot claim exoneration under 18.5
70 P Proper course from this position (not tactical) because she is 'at' the mark.
71 M X is Keep clear 18.4 does not apply as X is not inside RoW
72 M X is keep clear 18.4 does not apply at gate.
73 W X is RoW 18.4 does not apply at gate. Z must keep clear and X can sail on if she wants.
74 W (in relation to gate mark shown) Although X is subject to 17 she has a proper course to the other gate mark as well so she can luff (subject to 16) up to her course to the other gate withour breaking 17.

  2. I'm a bit confused. M is 'Mark room' but 'Proper course' is part of the definition of Mark Room. So I've read P to be a short rounding and W to be tactical. I think.

    61. MP
X has no ROW, therefore straight to the mark and straight round

    62. W
X has ROW and can sail an in wide out close rounding

    63. W
X has ROW. 18.4 does not apply. X can sail as wide as she wants

    64. W
    X has ROW [11]

    65. Don't know

    66. P
X has ROW but 17 applies - proper course while same tack and overlapped

    67. MW
X is entitled to mark room and as ROW boat [12] to a tactical rounding

    68. MW
X is entitled to mark room and as ROW boat [12] to a tactical rounding

    69. MP
X has no ROW, therefore straight to the mark and straight round

    70. MP
X has no ROW, therefore straight to the mark and straight round

    71. MP
X has no ROW, therefore straight to the mark and straight round

    73. W
X has ROW. 18.4 does not apply. X can sail as wide as she wants

    74. MP
X has ROW but 17 applies - proper course while same tack and overlapped
